How to Choose the Right Christmas Tree

With so many options, choosing the right Christmas tree comes down to five key decisions:

1. Real or Artificial?

Real Christmas trees offer the authentic pine scent, natural variation in branch shape, and the tradition of picking a fresh tree each year. They last approximately 4–6 weeks indoors with proper care. Artificial trees are a one-time investment that lasts 5–10+ years, require no watering, won't drop needles, and are available in a much wider range of colours, styles and sizes. Most Australian families eventually move to artificial for convenience, but many keep a real tree for the living room and artificial trees for other rooms.

2. Pre-Lit or Unlit?

Pre-lit (LED) Christmas trees come with lights already strung through the branches, saving you hours of untangling and arranging. They're ideal if you want a beautifully lit tree with minimal effort. Unlit trees give you complete control over your lighting — you choose the colour, type, spacing and quantity of lights. As a rough guide, a 1.8m (6ft) tree looks best with 400–600 LEDs, and a 2.1m (7ft) tree needs 600–800 LEDs for a full, even glow.

3. What Height and Shape?

Measure your ceiling height first, then subtract 20cm for a topper and 10cm for a stand. A standard 2.7m (9ft) Australian ceiling suits trees up to about 2.1m (7ft) comfortably. If you have a narrow space, look for slim or pencil trees — they give you the height without the footprint. Full trees look best in larger rooms where the spread of branches won't dominate the space.

4. What Colour and Finish?

Traditional green trees are the most popular and versatile — they suit any decoration scheme. Quick Tips for Choosing and Setting Up Your Christmas Tree

• Measure before you buy. Check your ceiling height, the width of the space, and the distance to power points if you're buying a pre-lit or fibre optic tree.
• Allow 15–20cm clearance. Your tree topper and tree stand both take up space. A 2.1m tree needs at least a 2.5m ceiling.
• Fluff the branches. Artificial trees come compressed. Spend 15 minutes shaping and fluffing each branch for a full, natural look — it makes a huge difference.

• Light from the inside out. If you're adding your own lights, start from the trunk and work outward, winding lights around individual branches for depth.
• Don't forget the topper. A tree topper — star, angel or bow — finishes the look. Secure it with the attached clip or a small piece of wire.

• Buy early for real trees. Real trees are best ordered from late November to early December. Earlier and they may dry out; later and the best sizes sell out.

Setting Up Your Christmas Tree

Most artificial Christmas trees from Christmas World use a hinged branch system — the branches are permanently attached to the centre pole and simply fold down into position. This means setup takes 15–30 minutes for a standard 1.8m tree.

Steps for Artificial Trees:

1. Assemble the stand. Open the metal or plastic stand and tighten the wing bolts. Place it on a flat, stable surface.
2. Insert the bottom section. Slot the lowest pole section into the stand and tighten. If your tree has multiple sections, this is the widest part with the longest branches.
3. Add the middle and top sections. Stack each section in order — they're labelled or sized to go in sequence. The top section is the narrowest.
4. Fold down the branches. Starting from the bottom, fold each branch down and shape it outward. Work around the tree section by section.
5. Fluff the tips. Spend 10–15 minutes spreading the individual branch tips upward, outward and sideways to create a full, natural shape. This step makes the biggest difference to how your tree looks.
6. Plug in lights (if pre-lit). Connect the light cords between sections and plug into a power point. Test before decorating.
7. Add your skirt, topper and decorations.

1. Cut 1–2cm off the base before placing in water. This opens the pores and helps the tree absorb water.
2. Place in a sturdy stand with a water reservoir. Check our tree stands.
3. Fill the reservoir immediately with fresh water. A real tree can drink 1–2 litres in the first 24 hours.
4. Check water daily. Never let the water level drop below the base of the trunk, or the tree will seal over and stop drinking.
5. Keep away from heat sources — direct sun, heaters, and aircon vents will dry the tree out faster.

Caring for and Storing Your Christmas Tree

Artificial Tree Care

• Dust gently before packing away. A soft brush or compressed air works well.
• Store in a cool, dry place. Avoid damp garages, sheds, or areas with extreme temperature changes. The original box or a dedicated tree storage bag is ideal.
• Don't compress too tightly. Over-compressing can permanently bend branches. If possible, store the tree upright.
• Check lights before storing. Note any non-working LED sections so you can replace them next season.
• Keep away from pests. Moth balls or cedar blocks can help prevent damage from insects or rodents during storage.

Real Tree Care

• Water daily. A well-watered real tree stays fresh for 4–6 weeks indoors.

What is the difference between PVC and PE Christmas trees?

PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is the traditional material used for artificial tree branches. The plastic is cut into thin strips that are wrapped around wire to form the needles. PVC trees are more affordable and have a classic, slightly fuller look. PE (polyethylene) is a newer, premium material where the branches are injection-moulded from real tree branches, creating a much more realistic appearance with natural variation in needle shape and colour. PE trees cost more but look significantly more lifelike.
