How the calculator works
Every number in the calculator comes from the formulas we published in How Many Christmas Lights Do I Need? Australian Formulas — the same maths our team uses to dress display trees and full house fronts in-store at Castle Hill. Nothing is a guess: pick your surface, enter a measurement, and you get the bulb count, the strand count (based on standard 10m / 100-bulb strands) and a practical reality-check tip.
The tree formula
Multiply your tree's height in feet by the bulbs-per-foot of your chosen look: 75 for the sparse, sculptural look, 100 for the classic medium coverage most homes love, 150 for the rich, editorial glow, or 200 for maximum sparkle on feature trees. Using cluster lights? Their packed density means you need roughly half the fairy-light bulb count for the same glow.
The calculator counts strands for the real products we stock — 10m / 100-bulb fairy strands, 1000-LED reels with timers, and 256, 384 and 2000-LED cluster strands — so the strand count is what you actually put in your cart.
Rooflines, gutters and fences
Walk the perimeter and measure the linear metres you want lit, then add 10–15% for swag depth, droop and corners — a 20m roofline wants 22–23m of lighting. Our icicle lights change the maths in your favour: measure width only, and the hanging drops do the visual work.
Trunk and column wraps
Wrapping uses a spacing rule, not a bulb count: wraps equal height divided by your wrap spacing (5–10cm), and strand length equals wraps times trunk circumference. A typical 2m pencil pine at 40cm around needs about 11m — one good 10m strand per trunk.
Solar stake runs
For paths and garden beds, budget one solar stake per 50–80cm of edge. No cords, no power budgeting — position them where they catch the sun and let them run.

How many lights do I need for a 7ft Christmas tree?
Use 100 bulbs per foot for the classic medium look — so a 7ft tree takes roughly 700 fairy lights, or 1,050 for the rich, editorial glow. With cluster lights, halve it: about 350–525 bulbs for the same effect. That's roughly 7 strands of standard 10m / 100-bulb fairy lights for the classic look.
How many lights do I need for my roofline?
Measure the linear metres of roofline, gutter or fence you want lit and add 10–15% for swag and corners — a 20m roofline wants 22–23m of lighting, so three 10m strands. A typical single-storey frontage lands between 30 and 45 linear metres once gutters and eaves are included.
Do cluster lights really need half as many bulbs?
Yes — cluster lights pack bulbs along the full length of the strand, so roughly half the fairy-light count gives you the same visual glow. A 7ft tree that wants 700 fairy bulbs needs only about 350–525 cluster bulbs.
How much strand do I need to wrap a tree trunk?
Divide the wrap height by your wrap spacing (5–10cm) to get the wrap count, then multiply by the trunk's circumference. A 2m trunk wrapped every 7.5cm is about 27 wraps — at 40cm around, that's roughly 11m, so one 10m strand covers one good trunk.
How far apart should solar stake lights go?
Budget one solar stake per 50–80cm of path or garden edge. A 10m run needs about 13–20 stakes. Solar stakes need no cord budgeting at all — just position them where they catch daytime sun.
