Christmas Light Storage: Organising, Protecting & Preserving Your Lights

Every January, thousands of Christmas light sets get pulled down, shoved into plastic bags or cardboard boxes, and emerge in November as a single tangled knot. Broken bulbs, fractured wire, and failed connections are the result. Proper light storage is not a luxury; it is the difference between your lights working next December and needing to replace them. This collection covers storage reels for string lights, storage bags for trees, and organising accessories that preserve your investment through the off-season.

The Problem with Improper Light Storage

Christmas lights fail for two preventable reasons: tangling and moisture. When fairy strings are stuffed loosely into a box, the wire kinks. Kinked wire fractures the internal conductor, creating dead sections that no longer light. When lights are stored in damp garages or sheds, the copper inside the wire oxidises, and the connectors corrode. Both failures are preventable with the right storage approach.

A light storage reel solves the tangling problem by giving each string a dedicated winding surface. A storage bag solves the moisture problem by providing a sealed, dry environment that keeps damp and dust away from the wire and connections. Together, these two tools address the two primary causes of premature light failure.

Christmas Light Storage Reels: How They Work

A light storage reel is a flat spool or frame around which you wind a single string of lights. The string lies flat against the reel surface with no crossings, no knots, and no kinks. When you unwrap the reel in November, the string comes off in the same condition it went on.

Winding Technique

Wind fairy strings with moderate tension, not tight. Too tight stretches the wire and stresses the bulb bases. Too loose creates slack that can slide off the reel. Wind in a single layer around the reel, keeping the string flat. Clip the plug end under the reel tab or secure it with a rubber band to prevent the end from unwinding.

How Many Reels Do You Need?

One reel per string is the cleanest approach. If you run multiple light strings of different lengths, dedicating a reel to each prevents the frustration of identifying which string is which when unpacking. Label each reel with the length and colour using a marker or sticker for even faster setup.

Reel Storage

Stack wound reels flat in a storage container. Keep them in a dry, indoor location. Garage shelving is acceptable if the space stays dry. Avoid sub-floor or outdoor storage where temperature swings create condensation inside the container.

Tree Storage Bags and Containers

Artificial trees need storage that protects the branch structure from compression damage and dust accumulation. A proper tree storage bag is sized for the full tree height with enough width that branches are not crushed flat against the trunk.

Tree Bag Sizing

Match the bag to your tree height. A bag rated for 7ft suits a 6ft or 7ft tree. A bag rated for 9ft handles up to a 9ft tree with the branches hinged and folded. The 185cm bag is our standard size for most trees, with a wheeled version for easier transport of heavier trees.

Folding vs Compression

Do not compress a tree into an undersized bag. Forcing branches into a bag that is too small bends and breaks the branch wire, creating permanent kinks that show when the tree is erected. Use a bag that fits without forcing, and secure with the zip rather than strapping that compresses the contents.

Wheeled Storage for Heavy Trees

Large trees in storage bags can weigh as much as the person carrying them. A wheeled tree storage bag eliminates the need to lift the tree for transport to and from storage. The wheels are rated for the weight and roll on smooth indoor surfaces. For garage storage, this is the practical choice for trees over 7ft.

End-of-Season Packing Tips

The way you pack down in January directly determines the setup experience in November. Here is the sequence that makes next year's setup fastest.

Pack Lights on Reels While Still Hung

Wind lights onto reels while they are still plugged in and on the tree or structure. You can see exactly what you are winding, identify dead sections immediately, and label each reel with where it was installed. This saves the November frustration of guessing which string goes where.

Test Before Storing

Before winding onto a reel or placing in a bag, test each string while it is still accessible. A dead string found in November is a string you can replace now; a dead string found when it is six metres up a tree is a problem. Mark any string that flickers or has dead sections with a tag and do not store it. Replace it in the next purchase cycle.

Label Everything

Label each reel with its location, length, and colour. Label each tree bag with the tree height and branch count. The two minutes spent labelling saves hours of trial and error when setting up next season.

Frequently Asked Questions — Light Storage

How do I store Christmas lights without tangling them?

Wind each string onto a dedicated light storage reel in a single flat layer. This prevents crossings, kinks, and the tangled knot that results from loose storage. Unwinding from a reel takes seconds versus the minutes spent untangling a loose-packed string.

How many light storage reels do I need?

One reel per string is the cleanest approach. If you have many strings, consider labelling each reel with the colour, length, and installation location for faster setup next year.

Can I store my artificial tree in its original box?

You can, but a dedicated tree storage bag is more durable. Original cardboard boxes compress, tear, and absorb moisture. A storage bag is water-resistant, has handles or wheels, and does not collapse under stacking.

How do I store outdoor lights to prevent corrosion?

Wind outdoor strings onto reels and seal in a dry storage container. Ensure all connections are fully dry before winding. Store the sealed container indoors or in a dry garage, never in a damp shed or sub-floor space.

What size tree storage bag do I need?

Match the bag height rating to your tree. A 185cm bag suits trees up to 7ft with branches hinged. For larger 8ft or 9ft trees, use a larger bag or the wheeled version to handle the extra weight.

Should I remove batteries from battery lights before storing?

Yes. Remove all batteries from battery lights before storage to prevent corrosion and leakage. Alkaline batteries left in devices can leak over months of storage and destroy the battery contacts.

How do I store wreaths and garlands?

Store wreaths in a dedicated wreath container to hold the circular shape. Coil garlands loosely in a large storage bag. Remove batteries from any pre-lit pieces and keep all decorative storage in a cool, dry location.
