Stands split into two categories that are not interchangeable. Using the wrong type risks the tree falling.
Stands for Real Christmas Trees
Real tree stands must hold a trunk with bark and provide water. These stands have a central spike or clamping mechanism that grips the trunk, and a water reservoir in the base. A real tree drinks water daily through the cut trunk, and the reservoir must be topped up regularly to prevent needle drop. The fresh tree stand range is rated by maximum tree height: an 8ft-rated stand holds trees up to approximately 2.4 metres, and a 10ft-rated stand supports trees up to 3 metres. Match the stand rating to your tree height with margin. A stand rated at exactly your tree height has no buffer for an imperfectly balanced trunk.
Stands for Artificial Trees
Artificial tree stands are designed to receive the central pole that comes with the tree. The pole slots into a sleeve and is secured with a tightening screw or clamp. There is no water reservoir. These stands are typically already included with the artificial tree purchase; a replacement stand is needed only if the original is lost, damaged, or you are repurposing a tree in a new location.
Rotating Tree Stands
A rotating stand turns the entire tree slowly through 360 degrees, showing every side of the decoration. These are designed for artificial trees with a compatible central pole. The rotation is motorised but slow and quiet. A rotating stand works best with a tree placed in an open area where all sides are visible, rather than against a wall where the back is never seen.
Fresh Tree Stand Sizing Guide
Getting the right size stand for a real tree is a safety decision, not a preference. An undersized stand will not support the tree's weight and leverage, particularly when decorated.
Trees Up to 6ft (1.8m)
A standard fresh tree stand rated for up to 6ft or 8ft is appropriate for this height range. The trunk diameter capacity is the critical measurement. Ensure the stand can open wide enough for your tree's trunk butt, typically 8cm to 12cm for a 6ft tree.
Trees 7ft to 8ft (2.1m to 2.4m)
For a 7ft or 8ft tree, choose a stand rated for 8ft or higher. The taller the tree, the wider the base needed for stability. An 8ft-rated stand has a wider footprint and heavier reservoir than a 6ft-rated stand, providing the leverage needed to resist side loading from a full decorated tree.
Trees 9ft to 10ft (2.7m to 3m)
For trees at this height, only a 10ft-rated stand is appropriate. The stand at this rating has a heavy gauge metal construction and a wide base plate. Do not use a smaller stand with a taller tree, even if the trunk physically fits, as the leverage from a 10ft decorated tree in wind or with unbalanced decoration will overwhelm an undersized stand.
Setting Up a Fresh Tree Stand
The installation technique directly affects how stable and how hydrated the tree stays through December.
Before installing, make a fresh cut straight across the trunk base, approximately 1cm above the original cut. This opens the sap channels that have sealed since the tree was cut. Place the tree in the stand immediately after this cut, fill the reservoir with water, and check the level daily. A fresh tree can drink 1 to 2 litres in the first 24 hours.
Level the stand before tightening the clamps. Most fresh tree stands have adjustable feet for uneven surfaces. If the tree leans after tightening, release the clamps, re-level, and re-tighten. A tree that starts slightly leaning will lean more as decorations are added.
Novelty and Decorative Tree Bases
For artificial trees where the functional stand works but the bare metal is visible, a decorative base or novelty tree collar adds a finished look.
