When Do Christmas Sales Start in Australia?
The honest answer: earlier than most people think. The Australian Christmas sale calendar runs in waves, and knowing the rhythm is the difference between paying full price in December and getting the same tree, lights and decorations for less.
It starts in July. Christmas in July is the mid-winter event where we mark down trees, lights and decorations for anyone who plans ahead — buy your lights while the heater is running and you will not think about them again until installation weekend. The next wave arrives with Black Friday in late November, when the widest range of the year goes on sale right as decorating season begins. From there, pre-Christmas markdowns keep rolling as ranges rotate, and the deepest cuts of all land at Boxing Day and through the January clearance, when seasonal stock is cleared out for the year ahead.
So if you are asking when the sales start, the better question is which sale matches what you need. The table below breaks it down.
When Each Range Is At Its Cheapest
How to Get the Best Deals in the Sale
- Make your list before the sale starts. The best deals disappear first, so walk in (or log on) knowing your tree size, light lengths and colour scheme rather than deciding on the spot.
- Set your budget around the big three. Trees, lights and inflatables are the lines where sale savings matter most — anchor your budget there and let the smaller pieces follow.
- Compare specs, not just prices. Two discounted trees can look identical and differ on hinged vs hook-in branches, bulb counts per metre and IP ratings for outdoor use. Check what you are actually buying before you compare the price tags.
- Measure your space first. Sale purchases are still returns-friendly, but the smoothest bargain is the one that fits — check ceiling height for trees, eave lengths for lights and yard space for inflatables.
- Buy storage while it is cheap. If the January clearance lands you a tree or light set for next year, grab the matching tree storage or light storage solution at the same time so it survives the wait in the garage.
Sale Shopping Tips
- Popular sizes sell out first. The 6ft and 7ft trees and the standard 20-metre light strings go earliest in every event — if your size is on the list, it is a today decision, not a next-week one.
- Clearance quality is full-price quality. Markdowns happen for reasons that have nothing to do with condition — end-of-season stock, superseded colours, packaging updates. The product is the same one sold at full price.
- Check the IP rating on outdoor buys. Weatherproof lights and displays carry their rating in the product details — worth confirming before you plan a permanent outdoor setup around a sale find.
- Do not wait for a deeper cut. Sale stock does not restage — when a popular line sells out at its first markdown, it rarely returns at a lower one.
Christmas in July and the Other Big Sale Events
Christmas in July deserves its own mention, because it is the sale event Aussies have fully made their own — roast dinners and decorations in the middle of winter, and a chance to buy the December kit while nobody else is thinking about it. If you have ever wondered where the mid-winter Christmas tradition comes from, our Christmas in July guide covers the whole story, from European-style winter nostalgia to how it became one of the biggest mid-year shopping events in the country.
The rest of the calendar fills in around it: Stocktake Madness clears the count rooms, Black Friday anchors late November, and the Boxing Day clearance runs into January. Each event discounts a different slice of the range, which is why sale-savvy shoppers spread their buying across the year instead of front-loading everything into December.

Frequently Asked Questions — Christmas Sale
When do Christmas sales start in Australia?
The first big event is Christmas in July, which covers trees, lights and decorations for early planners. Black Friday in late November is the widest sale of the year, pre-Christmas markdowns run through December, and the Boxing Day and January clearance is where the deepest discounts land.
What's included in the Christmas sale?
Every range we carry — artificial trees, fairy and icicle lights, solar lights, LED displays, baubles and decorations, inflatables, garlands, costumes and homewares. The mix changes as new ranges are marked down, so what is on sale today may differ from next week.
When is the Boxing Day sale?
Boxing Day marks the start of our post-Christmas clearance, which runs through January. It is the best window of the year for next-season stock-ups — trees, lights and decorations at their lowest prices before the new ranges arrive.
Are Christmas decorations cheaper after Christmas?
Yes — the period from Boxing Day through January is when seasonal decorations are at their cheapest, because remaining stock is cleared for the year ahead. The trade-off is choice: popular colours and styles sell through in December, so the clearance is best for basics, storage-friendly pieces and next year's planning.
Do sale items qualify for free shipping?
Yes — sale items follow the same delivery rates as full-priced stock: free shipping Australia-wide on orders over $199, or a flat rate of $18.99 below that. Large and bulky items are excluded from free shipping.
Are sale items covered by the returns policy?
Yes. Sale purchases are covered by the same returns policy as every other order, so clearance pricing does not mean clearance quality — it is the same range, just reduced.
Do you restock once a sale item sells out?
Most sale lines are final stock at that price — when they are gone, they are gone. Popular products usually return next season at full price, so if you see a deal you love, grab it while it lasts.
How often does Christmas World run sales?
Four headline events anchor the year — Christmas in July, Stocktake Madness, Black Friday and the Boxing Day clearance — with rolling markdowns on individual ranges in between as seasons change. There is almost always something on sale; the headline events are simply when the range is widest.
